  Our first trip to a karate tournament in Canada was a success ! We took part in the Gold Cup Kyokushin Tournament in Laval, Quebec with a team of five fighters and two trainers. We got a 1st place in junior semi-contact and a 3rd place in adult semi-contact divisions. All fighters from the knock-down division fought well but this time we lost the decisions. Nobody got injured or KO and we had a great time in Montreal !
We also met some great people and things are looking up for IFK Canada.
Congrats to Team IFK Canada !

GSP - Honorary 3rd Dan !

UFC Champion George St Pierre receives and honorary 3rd Dan certificate from Kancho Matsui, the president of IKO1 organization in Tokyo, Japan.
He is also visiting and training at a kyokushin karate dojo in Saitama ( watch the video ).

Amateur MMA in Ontario

 

 

Toronto, ON (CP24) - Kickboxing Ontario will now oversee amateur mixed martial arts in the province.  The Liberal government has given its stamp of approval to the group's application to be the governing body for amateur MMA.

What is Karate ?

Osu everyone,
Sensei Nicholas Pettas , a famous kyokushin champion and the last uchi-deshi ( live-in student ) of Sosai Oyama , has a show in Japan called Samurai Spirit.
In the following episode he will research the true meaning of karate by going to where it all started : Okinawa Japan.
Please take some time and watch the documentary ( about 45 min. ) and learn something about Karate.
Learning karate it is not only a physical activity, one should also research and try to understand the true meaning of the art.
The ideas presented in the documentary are very interesting , even for us who practice full-contact karate. Please keep an open mind and think about it !

2012 Kicks

We started the new year with 2012 kicks. It is already a tradition I can say, this is the 6th year since we started doing the kicks .
After a short holiday vacation , it was good to get back in action.

New Shodan at CKMA and IFK Canada

20 Karateka - 4 hours - hundreds of punches , kicks and loud kiai !
Not bad for a saturday afternoon !
We had 7 guests from USA IFK and 13 members from our dojo.  The first 2 hours we dedicated for kihon and syllabus practice. The last 2 hours it was for belt and rank testing . Sensei Todd Hutchison 4th Dan, shared with us the latest syllabus practice and different methods and applications in kihon practice.
We finished with the 30 rounds of fighting for black belt !
Mici did a great job fighting everyone 2-3 times and finishing with 5 black belts the last 5 rounds.
We will hold our certificate and belt ceremony first class in January.

The new ranks are :
9 Kyu - Paulo and Luke
7 Kyu - Sly and Jeff
5 Kyu - Alex
Shodan - 1 Dan - Mici

Two new students

Freddie and Benoit

Freddie and Benoit are the two new additions to our karate class. They are both at the beginning of their journey, without any previous experience in martial arts. Freddie is also training in kickboxing , so he is kicking butt four times a week. Benoit is 48 years old , but he has great energy and a fit body.

Sly Champion

  It was Sly's first tournament under knock-down karate rules , but he managed to grab the first place showing great technique, power and spirit.
